Nipper’s coming!
The most famous dog in the world comes to historic
Moorestown
Nipper 2005 is a public art project based on an idea first introduced in Zurich
Switzerland several years ago, where decorated, life-sized cows were placed on
display throughout the city, attracting thousands of visitors. Since then,
similar projects have been staged in cities throughout the world, such as “The
Cows on Parade” in both Chicago and New York. Nipper 2005 has expanded this
idea by bringing together the expressive power of art with the richness of
history in this elegant and charming community of Moorestown. Thomson S.A. owns
the Nipper trademark and has generously granted permission to proceed with the
Nipper 2005 project.
This fall, a pack of thirty fiberglass Nippers will arrive in Moorestown, each a
larger-than-life five foot blank canvas, beckoning to renowned and emerging
local artists, as well as schools and non-profits to unleash their passions in
diverse media including paint, mosaic, etc. Artistic guidelines and
applications will be available by mid-August (visit www.nipper2005.org or call
Perkins Center for the Arts). All design plans must be submitted by year-end. A
special “Grooming Committee” will first review all submissions and then select
the artists. Once Thompson S.A. gives the ok, artists will begin creating their
masterpieces over the winter months. Those who qualify will be paid a stipend.
The great unveiling will occur at the Preview Party in May 2005. During the
summer of 2005, the Nippers will be on public display outdoors throughout the
Township, waiting for some attention from visitors. Most of these colorful
creatures will be in easy walking distance of each other. Seeing them all will
require a sense of adventure for an easy day-trip from anywhere in the Delaware
Valley. Maps of the various Nipper locations will be available on the website
and other places, yet to be determined.
One of the hallmarks of Nipper 2005 and similar public art projects is that area
businesses, nonprofit organizations, community groups, educational facilities,
and even individuals may sponsor a dog. A plaque with the sponsor’s name will
be affixed to the base of each Nipper. Rounding up the dogs in October, it’s
off to auction for these pups. Proceeds from this entire event will benefit the
five nonprofit organizations: The Lutheran Home at Moorestown (former home to
Eldridge Johnson), The Evergreens (former home to Fennimore Johnson, son of
Eldridge), the Moorestown Community House (built by Eldridge Johnson), the
Perkins Center for the Arts and The Historical Society of Moorestown. Anyone
interested in learning more about Nipper 2005, check back with the website
www.nipper2005.org often or contact any of the Community Partners involved in
the project.
So whether you are interested in Moorestown’s history, an art enthusiast, a
former employee of RCA or just out for a day of fun with the family, Nipper
2005 is sure to please.
